ESMS Winter Challenge: From Carbisdale To ESMS

Children at Carbisdale

During this current lockdown, we want to encourage ESMS families, past and present, to stay active, by taking part in our new ESMS Winter Challenge: From Carbisdale to ESMS!

In spite of the snow and shorter days, we hope that the power of fresh air and exercise and the positive affect that they can have on our mindsets will help us all to cope better while we are at home. We are proud to partner with Edinburgh Food Social for this challenge, a social enterprise which has launched a 'Community Food Support' charity initiative to provide meals to those in need, with the help of their Head of Food Education and ESMS Former Pupil, Steve Brown.

The Challenge

The task is simple: we want to collectively cover the 193 mile distance from Carbisdale Castle to Ravelston Dykes, over the next four weeks, starting on Friday 29th January. We are asking families to take on 10 miles of this distance each before donating £10 to the initiative ‘Edinburgh Food Social’.

Families are welcome to cover the 10 mile challenge any way they would like. You can walk, run, cycle, skip (or hop!) the distance together over a number of days, or make up the miles in separate efforts. It is up to you! Please do make sure that during any activity you follow all government guidelines and keep your distance from others.

Edinburgh Food Social

Once you have completed your 10 miles of activity, we ask that families make a £10 donation to Edinburgh Food Social, so that we can help support those in need in our community. In response to the Coronavirus pandemic triggering an unprecedented demand for food banks, Edinburgh Food Social formed a coalition of industry professionals who have been working together to cook and distribute meals to those in need across Edinburgh. Your donations will help the group to keep providing food. It will also help to buy vital cleaning supplies, source ingredients and support those giving their time to cook and distribute the food.

Find out more about the great work this group is doing and Steve's own story in our article here.

How to make your donation

Your donations can be made to our dedicated Crowdfunder page here where we will keep a close eye on all of your funds raised and the miles we have covered to give the community regular updates. Each and every £1.50 will feed one person a nutritious, freshly cooked meal.

Steve said:

"The need for support within our communites became immediately apparent at the beginning of the pandemic and, since then, we have cooked and distributed over 75,000 meals for those suffering from poverty, inequality and isolation. It is only with the support of fundraising like this that we have been able to do the work that we do.

We are eternally grateful for the support that ESMS have offered us over the past 12 months and are so touched to have been selected for this! I know I’ll certainly be getting on my bike to make my contribution to the total."

We hope that the ESMS community will enjoy taking part in our Winter Challenge!
