Boys and girls from Stewart’s Melville College and The Mary Erskine School won ten medals at this year’s Brodies Scottish Schools Relay Championships.

On Wednesday 15th June at the Royal Commonwealth Pool the boys from Stewart’s Melville College led the way in the championships with a promising start for the S2 team (Joe Ewing, Iain Rose, Josh Mitchell and Thomas Ross) as they took gold in the Medley and silver in the Freestyle events. These successes were matched by the S3/4 squad made up of Archie Goodburn, Jamie MacDonald, Sonny Kennedy, Sam Bennet, Forbes Jackson and Jonny Jackson, who took the same medals in the same categories. Three members of the squad however are no strangers to gold medals in this competition with Archie, Jamie and Sonny having won gold medals in the championships each year since they were in Primary 6.

The Open Relay Squad added to the pot with two bronze medals in the Open Medley and Open Freestyle. The combined efforts of the boys, together with the points gained by the S1 Relay Squad (Cameron Alexander, James Donoghue Jack McInally, Alex Hay), meant that the SMC boys became overall Team Champions.

In the girls’ races The Mary Erskine School S3/S4 squad, and reigning champions, Niamh Ritchie, Katy Smith, Hannah Ewing and Abby Orr won double gold to hold on to the title for another year. Niamh, Katy and Abby were joined by Katie Goodburn in the open finals and won two silver medals in the Medley and Freestyle events to bring the combined medal total for the boys and girls to ten.
