S1 Entrance Assessment

Our Entrance Assessment will be held on Thursday 11 January, 2024

We are excited to let you know that the S1 Entrance Assessment for August 2024 entry will take place on Thursday 11 January 2024.

What to expect at the Entrance Assessment:

The S1 assessment for both The Mary Erskine School and Stewart's Melville College will include papers in Mathematics, English and Verbal Reasoning. More details about the papers can be read below:

  • Spelling - This assessment consists of approximately fifty words which will be read out.  This can help us identify pupils who may need support to improve their spelling. The score is not included in the overall assessment.
  • English Writing Task - The candidates will be given three titles from which they must choose one on which to write a short essay.
  • Mathematics - This assessment tests skills in numeracy.  Most Primary 7 pupils should be familiar with the topics covered.
  • Verbal Reasoning - Candidates are given a standardised verbal reasoning paper which asks them, for example, to complete sequences, work out codes and solve logic problems.  Before beginning this assessment, the boys and girls will be given a short practice paper.
  • Reading and Comprehension Assessment  - This is a paper which is made up of multiple choice questions.  The questions test vocabulary and the ability to extract the meaning from a number of short passages.

For overseas applicants or those based some distance from Edinburgh, please note that we are able to send out entrance papers to be administered in the applicant's current school.
