LGBT History Month at ESMS

February marked LGBT History Month at ESMS! This annual month-long festival of events is designed to celebrate LGBT life and culture, as well as provide a great opportunity to shine a light on the many incredible things that the LGBT community has achieved in Scotland, and around the world. Various activities took place across our senior schools to celebrate this, including:

Flag Pledge Signing - Students and staff from across SMC and MES came together to sign the pride flag to pledge their support for LGBT equality. The signed pride flag could then be seen flying high across both MES and SMC throughout the month of February.

SMC Aid Stall – SMC held a charity stall selling rainbow-themed sweets, stationery and face masks to help raise funds for LGBT Youth Scotland, a charity that works to improve the health and wellbeing of LGBT youth across Scotland.

Who Deserves a Statue Vote – Pupils and staff at SMC ran a vote asking which member of the LGBT community they think deserved a statue.

Library Displays – Both the libraries at MES and SMC had LGBT book displays featuring relevant books, encouraging everyone to find out more about LGBT history and more recent books, including autobiographies of famous people in the LGBT community.

Thanks to all our pupils and staff who worked hard to help raise awareness and celebrate the history of LGBT people throughout February. The schools will also be proudly flying the transgender flag on Thursday 31st March to mark International Transgender Day of Visibility.
