Young Golfers from Across Scotland Compete in Golf Tournament

Posted on 28th Jun 2023 in Sport

Over 100 children from schools across Scotland came together this month to compete in an ‘Open’ event at Murrayfield Golf Course.

The ESMS Murrayfield Invitational Schools Golf Tournament was established in 2018, by Pippa Johnson, Head of Junior School Sport at ESMS. It's aim is to give all children, with a keen interest in Golf, the opportunity to represent their school and compete in a tournament with other school age children.  This year, 15 schools participated in the event, with golfers coming from as far as Dunbar Grammar School and Morrisons Academy, to The Royal High School and St Aloysius College.

Murrayfield Golf Course closed the course to members for the entire morning to give exclusive use for the competition. Members of the Golf club also offered their services, volunteering as starters on the day.

There are two age group categories – 15 and over and under 15 and separate competitions for both boys and girls. Prizes are awarded to the best scratch and handicap golfer in each competition. There is also a 9 hole competition for players who have yet to gain a handicap.

Pippa Johnson, Head of Junior School Sport at ESMS said:

“What I love about this event is that it allows any child who is interested in golf to get involved, not just those with low handicaps. It is a real team effort, with staff and members of the Golf Club coming together with teachers from ESMS to make the tournament such a success.”

If you are interested in taking part in next year's event, on 14 June 2024, please get in touch at ESMSgolf@esms.org.uk
